Michael Knochenhauer
Michael Knochenhauer is Director General at SSM, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority. SSM has a broad area of responsibility related to all activities with radiation in Sweden and covering all aspects of radiation safety, including nuclear safety, radiation protection, security and nuclear non-proliferation. He joined SSM in 2014 and has previously held positions as Director for Nuclear Power Plant Safety and Director for Regulation and Knowledge Development.
Michael holds a degree in engineering physics from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where he graduated in 1983. He has 40+ years of experience in nuclear safety, having been active both on the industry side and as a regulator. He started out at ASEA-Atom, the Swedish reactor vendor (now Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB) at the time of the commissioning of the latest Swedish reactors, the Generation III boiling water reactors Forsmark 3 and Oskarshamn 3. During this time and later he was deeply involved in developing probabilistic safety assessment methodologies and use, both in Sweden and internationally.
Prior to joining SSM he was active during several years within Lloyd’s Register Consulting (LRC). This involved a number of different positions, including CEO of LRC Sweden and R&D Director on group level.
