Dr. Juhani Hyvärinen graduated with a M.Sc. degree in Power Plant Engineering from Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, in 1988. Following graduation, he started working with STUK, the Finnish Nuclear Regulatory Authority, where he was responsible for safety assessment of existing and new nuclear power plant concepts, addressing emerging safety issues, and developing safety regulations for new reactors. He also participated in the safety assessments of legacy reactors in Eastern Central Europe in 1999-2002.

Dr. Hyvärinen joined Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) as Professor of Modelling in Nuclear Engineering in 2014. Since then he has been researching nuclear safety, new nuclear technologies and advanced modelling of thermal hydraulic phenomena in nuclear reactors. Prior to joining LUT, Dr. Hyvärinen had served as the Chief Nuclear Officer at Fennovoima from the beginning of the project.

Prof. Hyvärinen is a member of safety committees of all Finnish nuclear power companies and advisory groups to the authorities (STUK and MEAE).
